The Coalfield Solar Fund was created in March 2023 to accelerate renewable energy access and workforce development in coalfield regions of West Virginia and Virginia.

In its first phase, the CSF made incentive grants to help four public educational institutions install solar power systems on campus: In Virginia, Roanoke City Public Schools, Lee County Public Schools, and Mountain Empire Community College; and in West Virginia, Calhoun County Public Schools.

In 2026, the CSF transitioned to its second phase of operations in the coalfield areas of Virginia and West Virginia, offering energy literacy programs to students and teachers at K-12 public schools provided by the National Energy Education Development project.
